Improved Skin Care Needed After Sun Exposure

Table of Contents

While experts have long been encouraging people to wear sunscreen and limit sun exposure, not much has been known about what happens after the exposure. A recent study by Douglas E. Brash, a clinical professor of therapeutic radiology and dermatology at Yale University dicovered that a lot of damage done by the UV rays occurs after the sun exposure.

About the Study

Brash’s team exposed both mice and human melanocyte cells to UV rays and found that damage continued after the UV exposure.

Sanjay Premi, an associate research scientist in Brash’slaboratory, discovered this occurred because two enzymes excited an electron in the melanin, a process known as chemiexcitation. This process was responsible for the UV damage continuing after the UV exposure.

The team tested two different products that were able to stop the UV damage from occurring after the exposure.

Sunlight’s Negative Effects on Skin

Proper skin care is essential when it comes to spending time outdoors. Prolonged exposure to sunlight without proper care can lead to photoaging. Brown spots and wrinkles can worsen your complexion and increase risk of skin cancer.
