Dissolving Lip Fillers: How You Could Benefit From a Fresh Start

Injectable lip fillers are an extremely popular way to achieve the plump contoured lips that are currently in demand. In the hands of an experienced and medically qualified practitioner, it’s possible to achieve enhanced lips while still remaining natural and healthy looking.

Why Might Lip Fillers Need to be Removed?

Unfortunately, we come across many patients who had somewhat unreasonable expectations for how much they could enhance their lips and went to inadequately experienced practitioners who went along with their patient requests, resulting in over-enhanced and unnatural-looking lips. Duck lips is the term commonly used to describe over-enhanced lips, but we also commonly see asymmetrical-looking lips and other unnatural-looking unwanted results.
In other cases the original lip filler was professionally and correctly applied, but (for various reasons) the filler has migrated away from the intended area, resulting in unwanted results. Worse still, once the filler has moved away from its intended area, it can continue to move over time.

How Can This be Accomplished?

Fortunately, all lips filler products are based on hyaluronic acid, and there exists an enzyme (hyaluronidase) that is able to break down and dissolve hyaluronic acid. This means that it’s quite easy to reverse the unwanted effects of the over-enthusiastic use of lip fillers. All dermal fillers will eventually be absorbed by the body; hyaluronidase simply greatly accelerates this natural process.

The Procedure

Hyaluronidase is applied using similar injections as are used to apply the lip fillers; it’s normally able to essentially reverse the effects of lip fillers in three to four days, in most cases.
Injecting Hyaluronidase will be accompanied by the application of the same topical numbing ointments used when performing the original lip filler procedure. The procedure may also be accompanied by a burning sensation; your practitioner should take precautions to minimize this discomfort. Light massage of the treated area ensures that the dissolving of the unwanted filler occurs evenly over the whole area being treated.
You should expect some temporary swelling and bruising following treatment; these should dissipate within a day or two following treatment.
